Suboxone Detox

The Ajna Center is an innovative holistic + modern, luxury treatment program for drug + alcohol abuse in San Diego, CA.

Suboxone Detox + Withdrawal Management

Many people try to get off long-term maintenance on their own and end up relapsing because they do not have proper clinical support. What they need is a clinically sound detox program to help them taper off maintenance drugs such as Suboxone.

At The Ajna Center, we have always believed that drugs such as buprenorphine, Suboxone, and Subutex are best used for detox and stabilization and that our clients are best served by helping them become completely free of them. We created the detoxification from Suboxone maintenance program to help those people whose previous treatment has not given them this opportunity. Clients may admit for as short a period as 10 days or as long as 21 days. If they choose to remain longer they can transition into the 31-day treatment program.

The detoxification program will focus heavily on integrative services, provided in both individual and group formats. These will include Chinese medicine and acupuncture, mindfulness meditation, hypnotherapy, restorative yoga, nutritional wellness groups, massage therapy, hydrotherapy, EEG biofeedback, and other support as needed.

By focusing on integrative services, The Ajna Center believes we can help clients deal with the anxiety of withdrawal, as well as learn how to better cope with stress. Acupuncture, one of the alternative treatments used by The Ajna Center, is known to have a sustained effect in relieving anxiety. EEG biofeedback, also known as neurofeedback, helps clients train their brain to reduce reactions to external stressors. Studies show that neurofeedback has cumulative effects and can significantly shorten the length of reaction time to stress.

Suboxone Maintenance Detox: What to Expect

Studies have shown that 60-70 percent of people put on maintenance drugs quit on their own within a year because the drug still gives them a feeling of intoxication and it can blunt emotions. The problem is that many of these people who try to manage their own withdrawal relapse to the original opiate. This is because they are not receiving clinical support during withdrawal and because they aren’t given tools to address anxiety and other issues that may trigger cravings for the original opiate.

After an initial assessment, the dose will gradually be lowered. The tapering schedule will vary depending on dosage upon admission. The client will be assessed every couple of hours for physical or psychological effects of tapering to ensure withdrawal is as comfortable as possible. Some non-addictive medications may be used to manage withdrawal symptoms.

At The Ajna Center, we have significant experience working with people who have pain but want to come off opiates. Research shows that long-term opiate use may, in fact, increase pain. Many clients find their pain actually goes down after detox.

We understand that some people have severe pain issues and we do not minimize that reality. Instead, we focus on developing a plan that may include non-addictive medications proven to be very effective in the management of pain.

The goal of this program is to give you the support, information, and tools needed to sustain your recovery. However, we understand that relapse may be a risk for some people. For those who have anxiety about relapse, or who chronically relapse, we can develop a treatment plan using a non-agonist medication that will be maintained for 3-6 months. Vivitrol is an example of a non-agonist treatment. By non-agonist, we mean the drug does not bind to the same receptors in the brain as opiates. Suboxone is an opiate agonist. Vivitrol is not an opiate agonist.

This is important because it means it will be much easier to stop using Vivitrol at the end of the treatment period. Vivitrol also protects against relapse by making it impossible to get high from opiates. If you were to have a moment of weakness and relapse, it interrupts the physiological response to the opiate.
